The sisters quickly built up a reputation for educational excellence based on honor to God and development of the entire person spiritually, mentally, socially and physically. The ingenious school was located in the city, on the site now occupied by the Townsville City Council, but in 1942, St Anne’s School was evacuated to Ravenswood for three years partly to continue the girls’ education in the relative safety of this insignificant inland town, but also to surrender their city buildings to the military. By the hasty 1950s it was obvious that the school was outgrowing its city premises and would have to move again. After 62 years of noble service, the sisters withdrew from the school in 1978, and a lay principal, Mr Neil Tucker, was appointed, with a commitment to guard the school’s ethos and religious focus. In 1980, enrollment was opened to boys in all year levels, and the school’s name was changed to The Cathedral School of St Anne St James to reflect its new identity as a coeducational school, whilst retaining the links between the creative St Anne’s School and St James’ Cathedral. The school is now a new independent Anglican school providing first class education and personal development for students from Premature Childhood to Year 12. The Cathedral School has undergone many changes throughout its long history, but there is one thing that has remained the equivalent it has everlasting provided a nurturing and hard environment where students can learn, flourish and grow in a caring Christian community. Sixty years later, the Sisters departed, and the school came under the oversee of the Anglican Diocese of North Queensland. The first lay principal was appointed in 1978, and the school soon became coeducational and assumed its new name. During the war years, staff and students were evacuated to the safety of inland Ravenswood, and in 1958 the school moved to its vogue site in suburban Mundingburra. Cathedral (as it is affectionately known) is now a modern, autonomous Anglican School. Students from Kindergarten to Year 12 enjoy the unique spontaneous environment created by the huge rain trees and new water lagoon in the school's grounds. The single campus is family friendly, and provides effortless transition for students as they progress through their years at school. A house had been purchased in Wills Street as the initial premises it was accessible to St James’ Cathedral and the city center. Anglican Church Schools League was formed to raise money for the schools in the north. 1941 The beginning dedicated school building was constructed a twostorey building with dormitory upstairs, classrooms and assembly hall below. 1942 The School was evacuated to Ravenswood due to WWII acquired a number of buildings as classrooms and dormitories for students and staff. School continued as normal’ for three years in this trivial inland town. 1943 Bunny House was created for primary school children White Bunnies and Brown Bunnies competed in a range of activities. A clock tower was built and Dr flecked made a clock for the bell tower at the new’ school. New buildings and facilities added as enrollments grew. Year 8 to become the first year of tall school. Primary school captain and prefects appointed for the beginning time. The school was handed over to the North Queensland Diocese to manage. 1980 The School became fully coeducational, allowing boys in the lesser school years for the first time. School Board replaced the Council Bishop no longer the Chair. Today, the school is a modern autonomous Anglican school providing first class education and personal development for boys and girls from Hasty Childhood to Year 12 and in 2017 the school will rejoice its centenary.
